Dark blue Montana sapphire set in 14 kt gold basket pendant
Every once in a while I procure a truely unique and special gemstone. Sometimes they are special because they are a beautiful and hard-to find color. Other times, the gemstone is a rare or difficult to find stone that is rarely made into a polished and cut gem. This time, I think it is both! Montana sapphires have a long and interesting history. They were once mined extensively, then fell from favor. Recently, they have become more popular and some of the mines have reopened!
This genuine Montana sapphire is a very clear, deep blue with green highlights. The color is vivid and intense. It has been set in a 14 kt gold basket pendant setting and a thin, delicate 18 inch cable chain also made of 14 kt gold. The gemstone itself is 7mm by 5 mm.
Sapphires are the birthstone for September, and according to the American Gem Society are supposed to “focus the mind, encourage self-discipline and channel high powers”. (Though, I would note that as a geologist I am most excited by their color and chemical structure!)
