Rice and the full moon shibori wall art
This picture is of a great, large harvest moon looming over ripe rice in the fields! I have always loved the “sumi-e” or ink drawings from Japan and many of my shibori pieces have drawn inspiration from them even if the topic of the picture is not particularly traditionally Japanese. That said, this is a pretty traditional picture! The navy of the over-dye is traditional but also matches the colder evenings I associate with harvest time.
Shibori is traditional Japanese "tie-dye". The pattern is first drawn in non-permanent ink, then stitched with heavy thread, tightened and the whole piece dyed. The stitches are then removed and the fabric ironed so that the pattern can be seen. This particular style is called "ori-nui shibori" for the stitching that forms the picture. The moon was done with a stitching style known as “mokume” or wood grain pattern. This is an original picture, there will never be one exactly like it again!
Picture dimensions 13 1/2 by 10 1/2 inches, mat dimensions 20 by 16 inches. The fabric of this art is cotton, dyed with fiber reactive dye.
