"The Center" a kumo shibori wall art
This picture is named “The Center”, can you tell why? While some of my pictures are “pictures” with a specific noun (butterflies, flowers, moon) as a subject, many are completely abstract. I love abstract art: they are like a little puzzle of emotion and meaning that every viewer has to decipher for themselves! This piece is a bright but subdued swirl of blues, greens and a tracery of navy blue. (It almost didn’t end up for sale, I like it too much!) It comes from the same dye run (color family) as a few other of my pieces, but the feel is entirely different.
This art was done with a traditional method of Japanese tie dye originally used to dye kimono and other clothing textiles called “kumo” or “the spider’s web”. The fabric is wrapped and tied to produce a delicate tracery of lines and net patterns. This is an original picture, there will never be one exactly like it again!
Picture dimensions 13 1/2 by 10 1/2 inches, mat dimensions 20 by 16 inches. The fabric of this art is cotton, dyed with fiber reactive dye.
