Hi, I’m Sumire. Welcome to the blog of Sumire Designs!
Writing the very first blog post in my very first blog is tough. I’ve been waffling about what to say for weeks…. Finally, one of my family members said, “Just post something! Anything!” So this is my introduction to my website, shop and blog! I’ll write about a little of everything here - my interests are many.
First let me tell you a little about me….
I am a geologist: my thesis is about trace element geochemistry of basalts in Idaho. The title alone makes people flee. When I explain some of the process involved in this research and just before everyone dies of boredom, I mention I’ve been playing with radioactive materials (that usually wakes them up).
I am a fabric artist: I am forever working on a project and experimenting with shibori and dyes. (The more complex the better!)
I am a jewelry maker: I love making sparkly things. Chemistry and pretty rocks - the geologist in me says life is perfect!
I am a personal tutor: I teach Japanese, English, chemistry, geology and a whole host of other subjects.
And I am a gardener. I spend my summers trying to grow the perfect tomato and all winter trying to keep the orchids alive.
Next, let me tell you about my shop….
Sumire Designs sells exclusively handcrafted items made by me or one of my family members. That reminds me, I’ll have to write about Hisayo and her amazing wire braid bracelets! She is a Geo-technical engineer and she can do amazing things with a piece of wire but more about her in another post…
“Decorating Your Home” featuring a fabulous selection of hand dyed products: noren, wall hangings and, art work. In this same section, you will find handcrafted table runners and toppers, candle mats and more. Yikes, that reminds me, I need to take photos.
“Fine Jewelry” is where you will find Hisayo’s wire wrap, plus set gemstones in sterling silver and 14 kt gold. I don’t work with base metals and fill, I’m allergic to them. Funny allergy for a geologist!
The “Crafting Corner” contains an assortment of hand dyed fibers, hand crafted tools and anything else used to MAKE art. The assortment is ever-changing depending on what I’ve been up to!
So as you can see, my interests are varied and so too shall be my posts! I’m not certain yet how often I’ll post but I have a lot I want to talk about, so check back often.
